11/21/12 – It’s Rivalry Week – Some Possible Scenarios

What a week we just had in college football! It doesn’t get much more exciting than this in a week that saw both #1 and #2 lose to really shake things up. This is just another example why college football has the most meaningful and important regular season in all of sports.

And it just gets better from here, with Rivalry Week hitting the nation in full force. Make sure you’re strapped in because the bowl picture isn’t in focus just yet and we could see another week like the last one.

A lot of discussion in our Team Selection Committee meeting this week about where various teams will end up and which teams are on our short list right now. And after all that discussion, we’re not sure we have a much clearer picture now than we did last week. Here’s why.

All the teams in our selection process are still in the same position, with the possible exception of Duke whose road to Atlanta got a little tougher after a tough loss to Georgia Tech.

After that, a lot depends on what the BCS Bowls will do, especially the Allstate Sugar Bowl. Those bowl selections will define the pool of teams available to us and other bowls in the ACC and SEC.

In the ACC, the big unknown is whether or not they will get both Florida State and Clemson – or one of those and Georgia Tech – into the BCS (assuming both teams win out).

In the SEC, the big unknown is which teams and what match-up is most attractive to the Allstate Sugar Bowl. If you assume that Alabama makes it to the national championship game, then the Sugar will get first pick among the remaining SEC teams including Florida, Georgia, LSU and Texas A&M. After this, the Sugar will have to pick an at-large team that would most likely be Clemson or Oklahoma. This will begin the selection process for the SEC bowls and determine which teams in the conference we will have the opportunity to select.

Remember, in the ACC, we select first after the ACC champion (and maybe one other team) go up to the BCS.

Here’s this week’s list and notes for the teams that are the most likely right now.

IN THE ACC (in alphabetical order):

This team is firing on all cylinders right now and has a chance to prove they are an elite team when they face rival #12 South Carolina on Saturday. If the Tigers do not go up to the BCS, they become a very attractive team for us and we’ll give them a good look with the other ACC teams in our mix.

Florida State

The Seminoles have locked in their spot in Charlotte against Georgia Tech with an Orange Bowl berth on the line. This week, FSU hosts rival Florida in an epic #10 vs. #4 match-up. A win in that game could ensure the Seminoles a BCS slot either way. This is another team that, if they are available, they would make a great selection for a trip to Atlanta.

Georgia Tech

The win against Duke kept the Yellow Jackets on our short list this week. After the grudge match with Georgia this week, Tech will face Florida State with a chance to win the ACC and go to the Orange Bowl. Short of that, Georgia Tech is in our picture and could create a strong match-up with a team from the SEC.

NC State

The Wolfpack held their own in a tough road contest at #11 Clemson last week in a game that saw the two high-powered offenses put up 110 total points. Mike Glennon is turning into a premier passer and really helps the NC State offense go. Tom O’Brien’s team will have to win this week to get to 7-5 to have a shot at a return trip to Atlanta and the Chick-fil-A Bowl.

In the SEC (in alphabetical order):

We were on hand in Baton Rouge for the Tigers’ battle with Ole Miss. What a game that was! LSU really showed what they were made of scoring 21 points in the 4th quarter to earn the win in another tough SEC conference game. Right now, LSU still has a wide range of bowl possibilities, including ours, so we’ll keep them on our short list and see if they are still there to be considered when our selection comes.

Mississippi State

The Bulldogs ended a three-game slide against three of the top seven teams in the country with a convincing 45-14 win against the Razorbacks to remain in our selection process. Our scout reported a very loud and very passionate home crowd and a fan base that was really excited about a possible trip to the Chick-fil-A Bowl. To stay in the mix, they need a road win in the Egg Bowl to be among the final teams considered. We’ll certainly be scouting them again this week to see how they fare.

South Carolina

We’re not buying into the reports that the Gamecocks struggled with Wofford this week. The problem is that most people don’t follow Wofford or have any idea how talented the Terriers are. In the end, South Carolina’s depth and talent won out as they should have. We’ve watched this team all year and they are worthy of their #12 ranking. This week they have a chance to show they are even better than that with a trip to #11 Clemson. A win there will ensure a great bowl destination for the Gamecocks, and that destination just may be Atlanta.

We’re back on the road again this week in force scouting five more games in the ACC and SEC.Here is where we’ll be:

  • South Carolina at Clemson

  • Florida at Florida State

  • Mississippi State at Ole Miss

  • Georgia Tech at Georgia

  • Auburn at Alabama

Remember to follow our scouts on Twitter (@chickfilabowl) and Instagram (@chickfilabowl) to see what they do on campus. Lots of great photos and insight from behind the scenes!

We've already done the Music City bowl fairly recently, and would be less likely to do that again (though would still be considering it). chik fil A would be a great time.
You are going to feel silly if you pick MS St. or SC over Vandy

Both those teams had good years, but fans are dissapointed about the dissasterous end of the season (MS ST), or the failure to get up to the top of the hill (SC). Vandy fans are fired up and will come out in force and the Dores are on fire!! You will feel pretty silly if you have to watch the Gator bowl to learn that.

A rematch between Clemson & USC will be a guarantee winner. You will have two highly ranked teams, a great battle on the field and in the stands for the fans! Clemson wants revenge and the Gamecocks always want to Beatdown the Tigers!! This would be one of the Best Bowls to watch for all college football fans!

Look at Vandy's resume, 5 SEC wins, 8-4 overall record. Blew out Tennessee at home (really not that much of an advantage there were plenty of UT fans that made the trip), Kentucky and Wake Forest on the road. SEC road wins over Ole Miss and a 5-7 Missouri team. 4 point loss to South Carolina in the first game of the season, before they even hit their stride. Played current #4 Florida tighter than Florida St. OR South Carolina, in the game until the last 6 minutes of the 4th quarter. This is Vandy's first back to back bowl appearances in a long long time. There is so much energy surrounding this team and their 6 game win streak and back to back blowouts. Fans are going to show up in droves from all over the country. This is a fan base starved of success that will absolutely sell out the stadium. If you want a packed house, ridiculously excited fans and players and a very competitive and exciting game no matter who the opponent go with the Black and Gold. Anchor Down.

As a Vandy student from Atlanta, I can say that the Chick-fil-A bowl has no reason to worry about Vandy fans not traveling to Atlanta. As many have said, we have a huge alumni base in Atlanta. Also, Atlanta is an easy drive for the large alumni and fan bases in Nashville, Alabama, and other parts of the south. In addition, as the enthusiasm on this page shows, Vandy fans would be insanely excited about being in the Chick-fil-A bowl and many would fly from all over the country to be there. For any other team you could choose, this is just another bowl. For the Dores, it would be history.

Not saying we're ready to taste the sugar, but playing in a quality bowl like the Chick-Fil-A would be the highest achievement this team has had in a long time. 2012 will go down as one of the greatest in VU athletics (SEC Bball Tourney Champs, baseball team finishing in the top 10. I can feel the energy surging for the Commodores over the last 2 years, especially the last several weeks as they ride this 6-0 hot streak they are on. They seem like a dangerous and aggressive team that are ripe for a big stage like Atlanta. I'd love to see them play the role of the fearless underdog against a good ACC team. I believe Nashville and Vanderbilt are ready to travel and enjoy a trip to Atlanta. The fans have to be more inspired and excited than any other SEC teams available for the Chik-Fil-A Bowl. Let them bring the noise and Anchor Down! With a top 20 recruiting class coming in, this is the moment Vandy wants that may just propel them to the upper echelon of the SEC over the next 5-10 years. On top of that people have bought in to this program and would love to see the exciting brand of football that Vandy presents. 40+ points in 5 games this year. We played USC tight and should have won had the refs called the pass interference call. South Carolina squeaked by Clemson. It will be a great competition that Vandy deserves. You want ticket sales? Pick the team with an alumni base that has a) a sizable contingent in Atlanta and b) the disposable income to fly from all over the country to watch their first major bowl game in living memory.

You want fan excitement and spending? Pick the energized fan base, the one that's giddy from their team's 6 game streak and looking to throw down and celebrate the fact that we're finally in this position at all, whether we win or lose (that is to say, after we win).

You want an uncompetitive beatdown that results in everyone changing the channel at halftime? Pick the team that's 1-4 in their last 5 games and just got slaughtered by the same 6-6 Ole Miss squad that Vandy took down.

Vanderbilt wasn't on the short list & we all know why. But now we see last year wasn't a fluke - it was the start of something big. And we showed up big in Memphis selling out our team allotment and more, selling out all of our events, staying in New-Years-Eve-Priced hotel rooms after dragging our families on 7-hour road trips to see our beloved Commodores play in the Liberty Bowl. I live in the Atlanta area & have reserved a hotel room downtown with hopes you pick Vanderbilt.
Here are the facts: 8-4, 3/4 losses to top 10 teams, other loss to top 20 team. Huge Atlanta alumni support. Easy trip for students & larger network from Nashville. 30K+ traveled last year & sold out our part. You get something new.

Vanderbilt is the most talked about team in the SEC right now & Chick-fil-A would be the perfect bowl fit.

On the ACC side where is UNC in this conversation? FSU or Clemson would not appreciate a trip to the dome, but the Tar Hells would love it. I'm all over a Vandy -UNC matchup.

They've just dismantled 3 of their last 4 opponents. Vandy has scored 40+ points in 4 of their last 5 games. Its a great story. We'd bring a ton of fans.

SC doesnt have Lattimore and Shaw isnt playing tonight. Their fans are disappointed. Miss St is starting to tank and plays a boring style of football.

Vandy is on a roll and makes a great story!

C'mon Vandy fans have a little class. You're all running down Miss State instead of building your own team up. Don't act like a bunch if losers. Your team is deserving of consideration. Why do you have to take shots at my team to build your team up? It'll all work out in the end. By the way MSU loved the Chik-Fil-A Bowl!!!!!!! After we beat Ole Miss we're ready to bring our 9 wins and national ranking to Atlanta!!!!!!!!

The best story you can sell is Vandy and The Southeast is full of alums. Ticket sales will be high ( look what we did in Memphis last year) and hotels will be full. The Buzz surrounding this team and program is at an all time high, after dismantling UT last week. Your ratings will be off the charts, due to an alumni base that is nationwide. No disrespect to MSU, but.....really. Go Dores and ANCHOR DOWN
State is comparing resumes with Vanderbilt?
Created by Anonymous in 11/21/2012 11:41:46 AM
A Miss. State fan talks about who Vandy has beaten? Last I checked, MSU drew Tennessee and Kentucky out of the East, which are a combined 0-14 in the conference. Then throw in home wins over Ark and Auburn, which are 2-12 in the league. VU might not have beaten a bunch of powerhouses either, but they've beaten OM in Oxford, and if MSU fails to do that this weekend, it'll mean just their 4 sec wins would come over teams that went a combined 2-26 compared to VU's 4-31. Vanderbilt's best win would be over Ole Miss (on the road) basically. MSU's best win would basically be over MTSU (at home). I think if one were to compare just their body of work, VU wins out. Now, as far as the "fans" you can get in the stands, I think too many fall under the assumption that a state school can have more than a private school or just base things on regular home attendance. With the success of VU's program, the proven success it's had at the gate with its recent bowl games, and the fact that there would be even more fans and alumni that would be excited to make a trip to Atlanta (not to mention all the VU fans/grads that already live in Georgia), it would be a very good turnout, probably more than anyone can imagine and clearly more than those at Chick-Fil-A can imagine if they continue to leave VU off its list. Somewhere, someone in this bowl game needs to learn how to think outside the box. A VU alum, judging by their annual average income, would likely to spend quite a bit during a week in Atlanta. Even average VU fans would spend a lot on hotel, food, etc for a Atlanta bowl game experience, because it wouldn't "just be another bowl game" to Vanderbilt fans and alums, it'd be seen as taking a step up.

To those teams you listed, you're just another good bowl. To Vanderbilt, you would represent the high point for the program in the past half-century. The turnout would be far better than you think

Created by FCDore in 11/21/2012 10:08:54 AM
Um, Nelson, Mississippi State's SEC wins are against Kentucky, Tennessee, and Arkansas. That's it, and to the extent it matters, our margin of victory over our common opponents has been greater than yours. We've already won in Oxford; you might want to make sure you do that, too. And while Vandy will have played two non-conference games against BCS foes, your non-conference schedule consists of Jackson State, Troy, MTSU, and South Alabama. The entire world outside of Starkville understands that your 7-0 start was entirely the by-product of your schedule. Good grief.

And with excitement comes $$$$$! Think about it. Vandy is hot right now and wants to come to the ATL to celebrate their season.

Listen, nobody is happier to see Vandy successful more than me, but all this Vandy is a better option than State talk is hilarious. Vanderbilt, you've had a good year, but you drew Auburn and Mississippi out of the west and beat Kentucky Tennessee and Missouri. Throw in that UMass and Presbyterian aren't exactly "impressive" wins and you'll find scheduling had a lot to do with your success. Take your Music City Bowl bid, it will be good for the program to stay home and get a much better shot at a bowl win with a weaker ACC opponent. Vandy in no way will ever "travel" better than State. You would return tickets to Ole Miss, too, if you knew you could buy them for 15 bucks in the grove.

This week's ESPN SEC Power Rankings slot Vanderbilt ahead of MSU for a second straight week. Vandy is on a roll having won 5 straight games and 5 of its last 6 SEC games. The Dores have a chance to finish the regular season 8-4 with a win on the road at Wake Forest this weekend. MSU has lost 3 of its last 4. Surely a loss to Ole Miss would prevent the cowbells from coming to town.

7. Vanderbilt (7-4; LW: 7): With a 41-18 drubbing of Tennessee, the Commodores have now won five straight games and have seven wins for the first time since 2007. One more win and Vandy will have eight for the first time since 1982. James Franklin has proved to be the real deal for the Commodores. This team is getting it done in all phases of the game and completely dismantled Tennessee in the second half Saturday. Wake Forest is in need of a win to become bowl eligible, but the Commodores roll in with a load of momentum.

8. Mississippi State (8-3; LW: 8): The Bulldogs regained some of the swagger they lost with three straight blowout losses in SEC play. Now, Arkansas has fallen on some real hard times in Fayetteville, but this was a win that Mississippi State absolutely had to have and it's a performance the Bulldogs needed as well. Mississippi State played arguably its most complete game of the season and quarterback Tyler Russell was about as efficient as ever. When this offense is clicking it's very hard to stop and it heads into the Egg Bowl with its confidence back.

The Dores have a huge Atlanta Alumni network and travel well, 30,000+ last year. With the Atlanta airport VU fans from across the country can easily travel here to Atlanta for the game. Chick-fil-a should give the Dores serious consideration this year rather than dismissing the team, fans and the possible SEC Coach of the Year.

We want the Chick-fil-a bowl and will fully support it. Mr Bennett we hope that you can see from the messages above we want to be included and feel the Dores warrant your

My family and I would definitely come down to Atlanta to see the Commodores in the Georgia Dome. Atlanta has the 2nd latgest alumni base after Nashville plus tons of alums and fans would come from out of town and fill up hotels and restaurants for you. Several current players are from Georgia and would bring in even more excitement. They also have one of the best young college coaches in James Franklin. Be innovators and please give them a chance!!!

16,000 tickets to the SEC team. Vandy took 30,000 to Memphis for the Liberty Bowl last year. Huge alumni base in the ATL; easy drive from Nashville and all of TN. A NO-BRAINER!

It is shocking that Vanderbilt doesn't make this list while Mississippi State does. It is possible the teams finish with the same record, except one team would be riding a 6 game win streak, and the other would have dropped 4 of 5 after starting the season 7-0.

Vanderbilt has shown it can travel after the school's performance at last year's Liberty Bowl and there isn't a team on your list who would be as stoked about a Chick-Fil-A apperance than the Commodores.

What about Vanderbilt? They are on a 5 game winning streak, and it'll be 6 if they beat Wake Forest. They're a great team to watch and we have a better SEC record than Miss St. if they lose to Ole' Miss (a team in which Vanderbilt beat in a comeback win. As you know because you had bowl reps. at the game!) And we brought 30,000+ to the Liberty Bowl!

Best case scenario for the Bowl is Clemson/SCAR winner to Atlanta. If it's Clemson, they should also take Mississippi State. If it's South Carolina, they should take Georgia Tech since NC State already played in the Dome in their opener vs Tennessee.
