With just a couple of weeks to go, I’ll try to start narrowing the field a little and talk about the teams most likely to be in our selection process in December. We’ll also have a slightly lighter travel schedule this week for team scouting, which usually means we’re getting pretty close. We had another great discussion in our Monday night meeting this week and heard reports from our scouts on the games we attended last week. Obviously all the games are critical this time of year, especially in conference play, and there are several key games for us to see this week as well. So let’s get into it. In the ACC: Clemson: The Tigers didn’t have much trouble with N.C. State and were able to secure their fifth straight win. This team is really rolling right now and we love to see this kind of momentum coming into bowl season. I would think C.J. Spiller is quickly securing his place on the Heisman short list and it would be well-deserved. We discussed Clemson’s improved national ranking and the exciting brand of offense they’re showing week to week (42 points per game over the last 5). It’s pretty obvious Clemson is in contention for our game, but we also understand the Tigers are looking for an Orange Bowl berth. If they clinch this week, we’ll have to wait and see what happens against Georgia Tech in Tampa. Georgia Tech: After a disappointing showing in our game last year against LSU, I’m not sure anyone saw this kind of a season coming from the Jackets. I give coach Johnson all the credit in the world. He has his bunch playing at an extremely high level and has done an outstanding job. In the BCS top-10, it’s hard not to like GT again this year, but like Clemson, they are looking ahead to the Orange Bowl. There are still a couple of scenarios that could have Georgia Tech back in our Bowl. Miami: Tough loss at UNC last week. The ‘Canes never really got it going and seemed to be going uphill all day. That said, we still like the U. You may not have noticed, but Carolina is turning into a pretty solid team, so a road loss against that defense won’t spoil Miami’s chances for Atlanta. They still have an attractive ranking and can finish at 9-3. In our discussions, the consensus was that Miami would definitely need to win their last two to stay in consideration for the Chick-fil-A Bowl. Virginia Tech: I talked about the Hokies last week, so let’s just say they are still definitely in the mix. Great team and top-15 BCS ranking. We’ll scout them again this week against N.C. State. In the SEC: Auburn: Really exciting game last week at Georgia and the Tigers certainly had their chances. Chris Todd is putting it all together in the last two weeks and looks really good throwing for 6 TDs and an 80% completion rate. The question we have is this: With a bye week to prepare for Alabama, can Auburn find a way to win against their rivals at home? If they can, Auburn could become an attractive selection for us. If they fall short and end up 7-5, they could still be on the board for us, but we’ll have to dig a little deeper in comparing them with other potential options. Georgia: A tough, gritty win against a strong Auburn team and Georgia is sitting in pretty good stead. I think the Dawgs are getting a little bit of a bad break from by the media. This team is 6-4 and three of their four losses are to teams with top-12 BCS rankings. They have a winnable game against Kentucky and a tough test against No. 7 Georgia Tech left on their schedule. If they split and end up at 7-5 and finish 5-3 in the brutal SEC East (4th best in the SEC), I’d call that a pretty good season and we’ll take a good look at them. But mark my words, this team is better than they are getting credit for. Ole Miss: Are you kidding me, Dexter McCluster? This just in: this kid is a heck of a back. What a game! And what a win against Tennessee. This certainly could be the year we see Ole Miss again for the first time since 1971, but keep in mind, they still have two tests left: home against LSU and on the road against Miss. State in the Egg Bowl. Anything could happen in either of those games, so we’ll have to keep watching the Rebels to see if they can stay in our selection process. They’re really looking good right now and have a chance for a really special season. Tennessee: Much like Auburn, Tennessee is coming off a tough road loss. I think they just caught the Rebs and Dexter McCluster on a career day. This is a team that will probably have to win out and get to 7-5 to stay in our selection process. If they can finish strong and build some momentum going into the bowl, the Vols could get a strong look from us this year. What about KY...6-4???? Are you still looking at KY? TN isn't even bowl eligible!! UK still has two very winnable games with GA & TN...and a very large fan following to CATLANTA...which brings BIG $$$$$$!!!

Re: Week of November 16, 2009 - Week four: Narrowing the field. Please take the most deserving teams rather than the instant sellout matchup. Clemson vs. Georgia or Tech vs. Tennessee are two old rivals, but not the best matchup.

Re: Week of November 16, 2009 - Week four: Narrowing the field. UNC, an elite Southern institution with strong Atlanta ties, is not on your short list? A boycott of the season opener may be in order given this kind of treatment.

Re: Week of November 16, 2009 - Week four: Narrowing the field. This always an exciting game. I'd love to see UNC there, but realize that's long shot. Whoever represents the ACC will bring an exciting brand of football to Atlanta. Also, UNC vs. LSU to start next year should be a good game, also.

Re: Week of November 16, 2009 - Week four: Narrowing the field. The UGA crowd sells out the dome every time! Let us have it back like we did when we wiped Va tech up even though the A She She team is the 2nd best in their league and the SEC team is the 3, 4, 5th best...SEC all the way!

Re: Week of November 16, 2009 - Week four: Narrowing the field. No love for the Eagles in Atlanta? Boston College has the same 7-3 record as Clemson, Miami and Va Tech, with a chance to win two more and still has a shot to reach the ACC Championship game for the third consecutive year - yet they still don't make your "short" list??? BC brings a far bigger TV market than the others, too. You guys missed the boat on BC in '07 when Matt Ryan was the QB. Don't sell BC short again.

Re: Week of November 16, 2009 - Week four: Narrowing the field. My advice for the SEC side, pick Tennessee. Georgia's about to play in Atlanta and Auburn just went to the CFA Bowl 2 years ago. On the ACC side, just draw names out of a hat.

Re: Week of November 16, 2009 - Week four: Narrowing the field. If Georgia Beats Kentucky and Georgia Tech they will not be going to this game they will be headed to the Outback. The fella who pointed out Tenn is not even bowl eligble is correct, however they probably will win their last 2 games and will be 4/4 in the EAST. If this happens this matchup should be either Ga Tech or Clemson Versus Tenn. The winner of Flla/Ala plays for the NC, the looser goes to the Sugar. The winner of the Ole Miss/LSU game will go to the Cotton because the Cotton Bowl contracts with the SEC West. The looser will go to the Capitol One Bowl. Georgia beat Auburn and so will Alabama.

Re: Week of November 16, 2009 - Week four: Narrowing the field. Dawgdan, I think you have it wrong about the OM/LSU bowl picture---the Capital One Bowl gets the 2nd pick of SEC teams right after the BCS, then the Cotton picks below them; so the winner of the game will be in position for the Capital One---provided whomever wins doesn't stumble in the final week of the season. I do think you're right about GA going to the Outback Bowl if they win out and finish 8-4 for the season.

Re: Week of November 16, 2009 - Week four: Narrowing the field. What is the 5th best team in the SEC is the question? hmm.BCS - AL & FLCapital One, Outback, & Cotton - LSU, Ole Miss, & ??It really looks like a toss up between South Carolina, TN, Kentucky, Auburn, & GA.Good luck! We should know more after next week. Good luck & WAR EAGLE!

Re: Week of November 16, 2009 - Week four: Narrowing the field. I just finishing watching Ole Miss beat LSU and UGA lose to Kentucky and I have the whole thing figured out. LSU and Ole miss go to Orlando and Tampa and Arkansas to Dallas. The Kentucky/Tennessee winner vs. UNC. It will be a good matchup and tell their fans it is a basketball game and the sell out is assured.

Re: Week of November 16, 2009 - Week four: Narrowing the field. Are you guys just going to ignore UK (it's not Kty)? One bad quarter against the Gators but could be 9-2 right now. We'll still sell 40,000 tickets in this economy.

GT-UT matchup? With the UGA loss today and the Ole Miss win, I gotta figure that UT is a lock to play in this bowl now. If GT wins the ACC, it's a toss up as to who gets picked for the other side. If Clemson wins, then you gotta figure GT gets the invite to return. Should bring plenty of fans from both schools for that matchup.

Re: Week of November 16, 2009 - Week four: Narrowing the field. As Lee Corso would say, "Not so fast my friend"!!! I'd venture to say Kentucky makes your SHORT list this week. We've won 5 of the last 6 and the atmosphere at Commonwealth should be insane next weekend for our match-up with the Vols. Make sure you send a nice scout team to check out that game next weekend, if the Cats can ride the huge wave of emotion surrounding the game we could be breaking in the New Year in CATlanta!!!

Re: Week of November 16, 2009 - Week four: Narrowing the field. Looks like you need to add UK after yesterdays game. We beat AU and UGA on the road and are sitting at 7-4 with a VERY winnable game at home next week.

Re: Week of November 16, 2009 - Week four: Narrowing the field. Just go ahead and pick UGA even though they lost to UK this weekend. UK obviously doesn't travel well due to their lack of turnout in Athens. They are more into basketball anyway up there. All of us UGA fans are ready to scarf up all of the tickets that we can get our hands on! I'll take 6 right now....

Re: Week of November 16, 2009 - Week four: Narrowing the field. The city of Atlanta would love the money a Kentucky crowd would bring to the city. I don't know how other schools travel, but Kentucky fans stay longer than just one or two nights; when they go bowling, they make a vacation out of it. Somebody said UK v. UNC, that would be a great matchup in my opinion.

Re: Week of November 16, 2009 - Week four: Narrowing the field. After a big comeback win between the hedges against Georgia, Kentucky HAS to be on the short list. If we beat Tennessee at home next weekend, Kentucky will finish at 8-4, 4-4 in the SEC, and second in the SEC East behind only Florida. Another little tidbit...Two of Kentucky's losses to USC and MSU came down to the final possession...We're a couple unlucky bounces from from beating everyone on our schedule minus the two best teams in America.Even with a loss to Tennessee, Kentucky should get an extremely long look from the selection committee...Keep in mind, Kentucky fans travel, and travel well...Not just for basketball. Look at our previous three bowl games for evidence to that.Kentucky vs. UNC...Show it to me.

Re: Week of November 16, 2009 - Week four: Narrowing the field. Arkansas is now 7-4 with a big game against LSU this weekend. Why is Arkansas getting no respect from the ChickFilA bowl committee? We've played the 3rd toughest schedules in the entire country and have the best QB in the nation. I think that is deserving of at least a little consideration.

Re: Week of November 16, 2009 - Week four: Narrowing the field. With UK going into Athens and taking down Georgia, coupled with the fact they went into Auburn and beat the Tigers, one would have to think the Wildcats are right at the top of the list behind Ole Miss. The only drawback is if UK beats Tennessee they will finish 2nd in the SEC East and be courted by the Outback Bowl instead.UK always brings a massive following to Atlanta for their sporting events, and unlike UGA and Auburn they are ending the season red hot. Not to mention they have won 3 straight bowl games entering this season.

Re: Week of November 16, 2009 - Week four: Narrowing the field. Kentucky should be there. They have had road wins at Georgia and auburn and broke 2 long droughts by beating them both for the first time in 30 something years, plus kentucky fans would bring the money to atlanta, Kentucky deserves it.

Re: Week of November 16, 2009 - Week four: Narrowing the field. What about picking UK ? We beat Auburn at Auburn, we also beat UGA at Georgia who you said was a good team on your blog last week . UK has demonstrated the ability to overcome much adversity and win in the toughest league in the country. Our fans will be excited to come Atlanta ! UK will be a good draw for the TV crowd as well. Bank on it.

Re: Week of November 16, 2009 - Week four: Narrowing the field. Kentucky brought 40,000 fans to the Outback Bowl in 1998. In 2006, we posted the largest ever Music City Bowl crowd after brining nearly 45,000 fans. We've followed that up with strong showings in the Music City and Liberty. Seriously, the "UK fans only care about basketball" theory is a complete myth. If anyone believe that, they have no clue what they're talking about.

Re: Week of November 16, 2009 - Week four: Narrowing the field. Want a full house, the nation's second longest non-conference winning streak, three straight bowl wins and fans that love Catlanta, then UK is the pick if they don't go outback. UK vs Clemson, UNC, or Va Tech would fill the place for the weekend, not just the game. UK fans are excited, more so than auburn, georgia, or usc this year.

Re: Week of November 16, 2009 - Week four: Narrowing the field. Kentucky for sure! We had huge SEC road wins with a true freshman QB and a massive fan base that would love to come to ATL on New Years Eve night, a guaranteed sell out!
