This past weekend is a perfect example of just how fluid the team selection process really is. All it takes is an upset or two, and your “short list” can take a new direction very quickly. I think it’s safe to say that’s what happened to us this week.

The three biggest impact games for us last week had to be North Carolina at B.C., LSU at Ole Miss and Kentucky at Georgia. All three were great games to watch and I think all three will have a tremendous impact on our selection process.

We’re heading into rivalry week with a lot of options and team combinations still available and it looks like we’ll have to get through this week before we know for sure which teams we’ll select. Obviously there are some critical games on tap this week.

In the ACC:

Clemson:
Six straight wins and the Tigers are on a roll. They have all the momentum in the world heading into their rivalry game with the Gamecocks and then a rematch with Georgia Tech in Tampa for the ACC title. C.J. Spiller continues to impress and is leading the conference in all-purpose yards. We know Clemson is thinking two more wins and a trip to the Orange Bowl, but a slip against the Yellow Jackets could land them back in Atlanta. We’ll scout them the rest of the way and keep them on our radar.

Georgia Tech:
With in-state rival Georgia looming, it’s hard for Georgia Tech to look ahead to Clemson, but we can. The ACC title game will have big implications for us with both these teams, and after a three-point game the first time around, we’re expecting another good one in Tampa. The winner is Orange Bowl bound, but the runner-up will still be in our selection process – even if it’s Georgia Tech, who we hosted last year.

North Carolina:
After winning four straight and five of the last 6 to get to a No. 24 BCS ranking, North Carolina gets added to our short list this week. We spent some time debating the Tar Heels in our Monday meeting and kept coming back to the fact that this team is a different team now than they were earlier in the season. Especially on the defensive side of the ball where they lead the conference. Going on the road and winning convincingly at B.C. was a tough challenge and it certainly got our attention. If the Heels can finish off the season with a win against N.C. State, we will give them serious consideration.

Virginia Tech:
The Hokies will go on the road this week for in-state rival Virginia. Given how tough the Cavaliers played Clemson, this is no slam dunk for VT. That said, Beamer’s boys have taken care of business the last three weeks – as we expected them to do – and are sitting in great shape at No. 14 (BCS and AP). We talked a little about the possibility of Virginia Tech coming to Atlanta for a third time in one season, but we know the Hokies’ fans well enough to know that this would not be an issue for them at all. A win against UVA and in their bowl game will give Virginia Tech six straight 10-win seasons. If things fall the right way, they might just be celebrating that accomplishment in the Chick-fil-A Bowl.

In the SEC:

Auburn:
Nothing new to report here with the Tigers coming off of a bye week, but they certainly are still on our short list. Auburn is averaging 40 points per game over its last three and if they can keep that up – and defend Mark Ingram – the Tigers may just steal one against Alabama this week.

Kentucky:
The Wildcats are surging and peaking at the right time. Winners of five of their last six, we have to give them some consideration this week – especially after winning on the road against Georgia this week. Rich Brooks’ club got a lot of “firsts” this week. First time Kentucky has won three straight SEC road games in 32 years, first win at UGA since 1977 and the first time to qualify for a fourth straight bowl appearance in school history. We haven’t seen the ‘Cats in the Chick-fil-A Bowl since 1993, but they definitely have a shot at it. The game with Tennessee is big, and we’ll be there.

South Carolina:
Another team coming off of a bye week with a big rivalry game coming up this week. If South Carolina can take down Clemson at home and get to 7-5, they may just get a shot at the Chick-fil-A Bowl for the first time since 1969. We’ll be watching to see if Eric Norwood and crew can find an answer for C.J. Spiller. That should be the key to the game. The conversation about USC was short, and to the point:  They must win.

Tennessee:
A solid win against Vanderbilt, and the Vols are winners of three of four. That will keep them on our short list this week, but we’re already looking ahead to a critical game against Kentucky this week. Jonathan Crompton is turning into quite a player, but going on the road to face a Kentucky team that’s really clicking will certainly test him. We’re expecting quite a battle in this one and it could be the biggest game on the board for us this week.

Here’s our scouting schedule for this week.

• Clemson at South Carolina
• Georgia at Georgia Tech
• Ole Miss at Miss. State
• Tennessee at Kentucky
• UNC at NC State
• Virginia Tech at Virginia

Uk seems the best fit, vs clemson or unc, the cats are finishing strong, have cobb/locke as a dynamic duo, second longest non-conference winning streak in nation, three straight bowl wins, and cat fans will flock to catlanta for a wild new year's eve if given the chance, the cats are finishing better than auburn or usc and as shown in the past, cat fans love to go to bowls and love atlanta

Why is Arkansas not on the short list? With a win over LSU they will finish number 4 overall in the SEC. Even with a loss they are 7-5, same record as the teams being considered and beat two of them, Auburn and SC.

Re: Week of November 23, 2009 - Wek five: Rivalry Week.

UNC would love to land here, but the SEC opponents look underwhelming. I thought Ole Miss would be on this radar...SC has too many losses, Kentucky is not good enough. Auburn is the only team mentioned here that would be a solid game to attend. UNC/Ole Miss would be awesome in the Chick-Fil-A Bowl; I'd get tickets for that one.

Re: Week of November 23, 2009 - Wek five: Rivalry Week.

The Heels had a blast against Auburn in 2001! We'd love an invite, and the team is really surging now. I realize VPI has the higher ranking, but Carolina just beat them in Blacksburg, and we've got identical 8-3 records. The Heels have worked hard to overcome a slew of early major injuries. In my humble opinion, there's no question which school deserves the pick.

It'd be fun to play any of the SEC opponents. They'd all bring lots of passionate fans that would take it hard when we put them down on the field. ;)

Week of November 23, 2009 - Wk five: Rivalry Week.

SEC: If the South Carolina Gamecocks upset Clemson on Saturday, you're going to have one rabid and fired-up fan base. They'll easily sell out their ticket allotment and will no doubt be looking for a whole bunch more. There's also something to be said for rewarded the Gamecocks for their schedule strength. They're the only team in the country which played 3 teams ranked in the Top 5 at the time they played them (#1 Florida, #2 Alabama, #4 Ole Miss). Kentucky is more likely headed to the Outback if they beat Tennessee to go 8-4, although their non-conference schedule is an embarrassment. If the Vols win, they would be a candidate at 7-5 but do you really want the Lane Kiffin circus show coming to Atlanta? That team is volatile and somewhat tarnished right now - in the news for all the wrong reasons. Auburn would be a good pick if they can upset Alabama, but does anyone really see that happening?

ACC: VaTech would be a solid pick, but one has to wonder how fired-up their fan base would be to travel back to Atlanta for the 3rd time this season? And this is a season, which frankly speakng, is their worst in a number of years (good fans, yes, but let's face it - they're a bit spoiled by their run of success under Coach Beamer). UNC would be an interesting pick as they've come back from the dead late in the season and although it's still a basketball school, their fan base may travel for this game. Miami would also be an interesting pick. They don't have great fans but they did travel okay for the CFA Bowl vs. Florida a few years ago...and they still have a well known national name (this has been their best season in ages). Clemson is a possibility if they lose to GaTech, but if they also lose to South Carolina, I'd have to think they're out.

Re: Week of November 23, 2009 - Wek five: Rivalry Week.

North Carolina vs. Tennessee OR North Carolina vs. South Carolina would be some primetime matchup. It would add a little NFL flavor as well with Butch Davis, Steve Spurrier, or Lane Kiffin! The Tarheel defense and Marvin Austin shutdown the Hokies and Canes this year... we welcome any SEC challenger!!!

Gamecock Nation will rock the Georgia Dome. Spurrier is back calling the plays, the defense shut down Spiller's run game from the tailback position. The Gamecocks had a shot to upset the Gators two weeks ago and dominated Clemson today. They are playing great ball now, 2 - 0 against the ACC this year and deserve your consideration.

Think after South Carolina dominated Clemson they should be in this bowl game, plus South Carolina fans would pour into the Georgia Dome. Tennesse would be the only other SEC team worthy of going but they just won a halftime game against Kentucky (not very impressive). I think South Carolina vs. Virginia Tech will be the best game for the Chick-fil-A Bowl.

By RoosterBooster on   11/29/2009 8:11 AM

Re: Week of November 23, 2009 - Week five: Rivalry Week.

Out of the running:
Alabama/Florida- BCS
LSU- Cap One
Ole Miss- Cotton
Tennessee-Outback
Miss State- Not eligible
Vandy- Not eligible

Remaining:
Georgia- Beat GaTech but lost to Kentucky in Athens two weeks ago. Additionally, it will be the same issue as GaTech caused last year where it wont bring as much to the city with such a localized fanbase. Beat South Carolina, Auburn, and Arkansas... lost @ home to UK.

South Carolina- Impressive win over Clemson, if not for that game though they would have been without a doubt the weakest finisher in the SEC though. Stumbled down the stretch and the Gamecocks are notorious to lay an egg (no pun intended) in bowl games (see last year's Outback fiasco) and are probably the worst travelling fanbase. Lost @ Athens close, barely beat UK @ home.

Arkansas- They were tough down the stretch and was possibly a field goal away from the Cotton Bowl. Arkansas travels better than South Carolina, but is probably the weakest of the other remaining teams. Lost to Auburn, Lost to Georgia

Kentucky- Lost in OT to Tennessee or else they would be in the Outback. Kentucky was one of the hottest teams in the SEC until tonight including defeating both Auburn and Georgia on the road. Kentucky doesnt have the following of Auburn or Georgia, but they will travel better than SC or Arkansas and unlike UGA will bring mony into the city. Lost @ SC when starting QB was injured, won @ Auburn and @ UGA.

Auburn- Gave Alabama all they wanted and has a huge fan following that is not too far away, butfar enough that fans will have to stay overnight. Sold out Chick Fil-A two years ago. The drawback with Auburn is their head to head matchups with the other competing teams. Won @ Arkansas, Lost @ UGA, and @ home vs. UK.

In other words..

FAN FOLLOWING
1.Auburn- Sure fire sell out, fans spend night
2. UGA- Sure fire sell out, but economically city will be hurt.
3. Kentucky- Fans will be there for 2 days, and excellent recent history of travelling to bowls
4. Arkansas- 2 day stay for fans, but ticket sales is variable
5. South Carolina- poor turnout to more prestigous bowl in recent years hurts them

HEAD TO HEAD
1. Kentucky- 2-1, both wins on the road, only loss was a tossup on the road.
2. Georgia- 3-1, close wins at home over USC and Auburn, shooutout win @ Arkansas, recent close loss at home to UK.
3. Arkansas- 2-1, Beat Auburn and USC handidly at home, lost at home to UGA
4. South Carolina- 1-2, Barely beat Uk at home, close loss @ UGA, blowout loss at Ark
5. Auburn- 0-3, Lost on road @ Ark and UGA, lost @ home vs. UK

I think it comes down to UGA or UK if you break it down... hard to go against UK when just last week they went into Athens and won.

Re: Week of November 23, 2009 - Week five: Rivalry Week.

Loser of ACC Championship will eliminate either GA or SC. Bowl will not want to rematch either Clemson or GA Tech with SC or GA. UK beat both Auburn and GA, so if Clemson is the ACC team you have to take UK. If GA Tech is the ACC team, you could take SC, but they barely sold tickets to the Outback last year. UK is a great matchup with either of your ACC teams and UK will own the city of Atlanta. The 'Cats are the choice!!!!!

The way I'm looking at it is USC or GA and VT or UNC

Yeah South Carolina lost to Ga but it it was close had usc had a chance to win. South Carolina fans will travel to Atlanta especially if you put vt or unc in the game. UNC snubbed South Carolina from playing them next year and South Carolina fans would like nothing more than to see North Carolina end the season with a lose to them and open the season with a lose to LSU in Atlanta.

You guys have said over the last few years that it has been hard to believe that USC has not been invited to the Peach Bowl since 69. Well now is a great chance to get us back there more than ever. UGA has been to your game a lot lately and its time for some new teams to play in your great Bowl game. Also UGA will be going through changes on there staff. Spurrier and our fan base will bring a lot of excitement to your bowl. VT and USC would be a must see Bowl game this season

By will on   11/29/2009 4:38 PM

Re: Week of November 23, 2009 - Week five: Rivalry Week.

After beating GA Tech, Georgia is out on a hot note that no one would have expected. It could also be argued that had AJ Green been in the Kentucky game (and/or Bacarri Rambo), we would have beaten the Cats. We HAVE beaten all the other teams being considered for this bowl... Auburn, Arkansas, South Carolina. So if you're looking for the best team, it's Georgia.

Obviously we will travel well... no question. As far as hotel sales go, everyone knows college football fans drink. Therefore they will opt to stay in town and get a hotel room, particularly because it's on New Year's Eve, and stay in town than hit the streets and drive home. Besides, Athens isn't much closer to Atlanta than Auburn is.

And speaking of strength of schedule, no one had the consistently strong schedule Georgia has had. We played 11 BCS schools this season, including traveling to Oklahoma State for our opener and hosting Arizona State at home. No other school has the consistent strength of schedule Georgia had this season.

What a GREAT game against Clemson yesterday. The dream match up would be between USC and UNC. That game would sell out the Georgia Dome, I would buy tickets. My wife is a huge UNC fan, and I think that it would be a great game and would be a fun trip. It might not be good for our marriage, lol but it would be the perfect match-up. Re: Week of November 23, 2009 - Week five: Rivalry Week.

Kentucky fan here lobbying for the invitation to the Chick Fil-A Bowl. Kentucky fans have demonstrated the past three years how well they will travel to a bowl game. Sell-outs in back-to-back years at the Music City Bowl, hotel rooms, restaurants, bars all filled with Wildcat fans. The city of Atlanta also knows what Kentucky brings every March to Atlanta for the SEC Basketball Tournament. Hence, the designation of "Catlanta" that was mentioned before. While South Carolina, Georgia, and Auburn would all be good selections, I think Kentucky would be the bowl game's best bet in terms of revenue for the local economy. Whoever goes, the game will sell out as usual. With a tough economy, Atlanta could use the Chick Fil-A's help in picking the one team that will spend the most money. I have 2 rooms reserved for New Year's Eve in Atlanta, and I hope I get to keep them.

Gamecocks would be a great fit in Atlanta. You would have no problem selling tickets if you matched the Gamecocks up with UNC. But if you want to make the craziest atmosphere that Atlanta has ever seen, put the Gamecocks up against Clemson for a rematch.....wow that would be great for the states of GA or SC

Please pick the gamecocks! We travel well, have an energetic fan base that spends money, havent been invited in 30 years, play well against acc, have the ole ball coach, flashy young talent, & deserve a closer bowl. We often get better bowls than we deserve due to the fact that we travel so well, but this year there are so many other teams with the same record that we feel we should get the love from the chickfila! sc/nc is what the people want! Even in our eight & nine win seasons, all I ever wanted for Christmas was to go to the chickfila bowl!!!! Please Santa, pick us!

Re: Week of November 23, 2009 - Week five: Rivalry Week.

Take the Gamecocks! Win, lose, or draw, their fans have proven their loyalty & will spend lots of money in Atlanta! We have wanted the chickfila bowl for years, but we usually get sent further because we travel so well. Please reward our fans & let us play closer to home! We will sell that place out in a matter of minutes and with us beating nc last year & nc state & clemson this year, you know the acc wants some of the gamecocks !! We are the total package: rabid fans, money to spend, legendary coach, young talent, & a rivalry with the acc! We will be there days in advance & bring in our new year atl style! The chickfla bowl is, to me, the best bowl outside of the bcs because it features the two premiere conferences that have love/hate relationships throughout the season...Please take the gamecocks!

Now that carolina has beat clemson, our fan base is insane with bowl season spirit! last years bowl appearence was the result of a thrashing by florida and a humiliating loss to the tigers. Choose SCAR over GA because we were on the 5 yard line at the end of the game and only down by 4. GA has done nothing since besides beat they're rival who has a hit or miss offence. We were about to upset FLA before a freak pick. we finished 7-5 with a young team with the toughest schedule in the nation. SEE YOU IN ATLANTA!!!

Re: Week of November 23, 2009 - Week five: Rivalry Week.

You all need to give it up... UGA is the clear contender for the SEC. Just look at the SEC website at their bowl selection process and with the CFB being the 6th pick(usually 5th, but the Nat Champ moves it to 6th) and UGA ranked 6th out of the full SEC Conf. it is the logical pick. Plus with 92,000+ sold out every home game in Athens for the past seasons, the CFB will have an automatic sell out and all of those party hard UGA fans will stay in the ATL since it is New Years Eve anyway. I also think the economy will play into this as well since a lot of us can't afford to travel hundreds of miles to a game right after Christmas, but we WILL be able to stay in state and save some travel time/expense. BTW, most of us UGA football donors have already paid for our tickets in advance and I am sure the CFB knows this too. GO DAWGS!! Sic Em' WOOF WOOF!!

So the ESPN "Experts" are picking Georgia vs. Va. Tech... That could be decent game and the ticket sales would definitely be there. Other good matchups would be a rematch of USC vs. Clemson or Tenn vs. Miami. All of which would get a sell out crowd.

Someone posted earlier that the SEC opponents "look underwhelming"... I that that this past weekends games have shown us that the top ACC teams still cannot compete with the bottom half of the SEC teams. USC beat Clemson and Georgia beat Georgia Tech. I'm not an SEC Fanatic but the ACC teams seem to be too overrated. I believe that the Gamecocks are 2-0 this season vs. ACC teams. Give those boys a shot to play in Atlanta!

Re: Week of November 23, 2009 - Week five: Rivalry Week.

south carolina has a bigger fanbase than arkansas and kentucky and would bring more fans to the game than either school. to the guy claiming carolina doesn't travel well, what are you talking about? last year was an exception to the rule due to pitiful performances against clemson and florida. our fanbase is so excited about our youth and ability to blowout a good clemson team. we will show up in droves to whatever bowl game chooses us. a south carolina v. va tech/unc would be phenomenal for the atlanta. tv ratings would be off the charts. if the chick fil a bowl buckles under local pressure and picks either georgia or ga. tech, they will be making a major mistake. i live 3 hrs from atlanta and will stay 2 nights and spend money in atlanta. local georgians will not.

Re: Week of November 23, 2009 - Week five: Rivalry Week.

My opinion, for what it's worth (and I've been a college football fan for over 30 years)...

In the ACC -

GEORGIA TECH - Probably not. Another home game for them. Plenty of ticket sales, but not as much business for hotels, restaurants, etc. Still, their record does look good, even losing the title game.
CLEMSON - I'm worried that after being dominated by South Carolina and then losing the title game, their fans will be pissed off and stay home. Clemson fans are great when the team's winning, but they're really sore losers.
VIRGINIA TECH - an excellent choice. Excellent fans, nationally respected program, good record. Question is, how many times will their fans travel to Atlanta?
MIAMI - Good for TV ratings, bad for ticket sales and hotels.
NORTH CAROLINA - Another excellent choice. A program that seems to be on the rise, though the loss to NC State hurt. Should bring a good many fans.

In the SEC (unless a special deal is made, it looks like you choose from six teams with 7-5 records!!!) -

GEORGIA - On a role after beating Tech. Will sell lots of tickets, but probably not very good for the hotels and restaurants, as many of their fans will drive in for the game or at most one night.
TENNESSEE - I try to stay objective, but personally, I will not buy a ticket to see this bunch of criminals. Yes, their fans travel really well. Still, with all the bad publicity surrounding this team, I think it will reflect very poorly on the bowl that choses them over other teams with the same record.
KENTUCKY - Not a bad choice. They lost to South Carolina and Tennessee, but they did beat Georgia. Their fans don't traditionally travel that well (basketball is king, remember), but they're having a good season and would probably bring a pretty good following. Not much national TV appeal though.
AUBURN - Also not a bad choice. Only thing is, I'm not really sure their fans really want to come here. For some reason Auburn fans seem flat this year. Maybe because they've lived in Bama's shadow for a while now, but the school doesn't have the enthusiasm it had a few years ago. Still, their fans usually travel well, and the program is respected.
ARKANSAS - Again, not a bad choice. They've had a good year and have a good fan base. It's a longer drive for their fans than some schools, but they usually travel well.
SOUTH CAROLINA - A very good choice. They looked really sharp beating Clemson and their fans are fired up. They played both Bama and Florida tough, and beat both Ole Miss and Kentucky. Last year, their team wasn't very good and they knew it, so they only had an average showing in Tampa, but usually this school brings a huge fan base. Plus, Spurrier is a national celebrity. Love him or hate him, people want to see his teams play, both in person and on TV. Expect both a sellout and excellent TV ratings if you choose South Carolina.

My First Choice Pick - North vs. South (Carolinas, that is)
These two schools have a deep rivalry dating back to their days together in the ACC. Both schools fans will kill for a chance to see this game.

My Second Choice Pick - South Carolina vs. Virginia Tech
I can see it now...Beamer vs. Spurrier. The fans would love it and would flock to Atlanta, and the media would eat it up. (Did you know that Beamer's son is a coach at South Carolina for Spurrier?)

The fact is, South Carolina should be the obvious choice from the SEC because... (a) they are the perfect distance to bring tons of fans (and money) to Atlanta and they would sell every ticket you give them, plus sell out a lot of hotels (b) Spurrier... some love him, some hate him, but Spurrier always brings in big TV audiences, not just in the South but nationally (c) they're a former ACC school, and they are natural rivals with the ACC (d) they haven't been to the Chick-fil-a Bowl in 30 years (e) they beat Clemson, Ole Miss, and Kentucky, and even their losses have been good games, including their games with Florida and Alabama.

In the ACC, the choice is not so easy. Both North Carolina and Virginia Tech have a lot to offer the Chick-fil-a Bowl. Between them it's about a toss-up.

By jdoran on   11/30/2009 10:10 AM

Re: Week of November 23, 2009 - Week five: Rivalry Week.

THIS IS THE BOWL GAME THAT CAROLINA FANS REALLY, REALLY, WANT!!! It's perfect for us! A sellout without a doubt! The most natural ACC rival. We always sell out any game against an ACC team. The perfect driving distance (most Carolina fans drive, not fly, to games, making bowls in Alabama and Louisiana almost impossible to get to). Spurrier brings in a national TV audience, not just a southern viewing audience. Football fans in California, New York, Chicago, even overseas fans are always curious what he's up to!

In the Coaches Poll (USA Today) just released, South Carolina is the highest ranked of the 7-5 SEC teams. Georgia is below them, followed by Arkansas, and none of the others even got one vote.

No coaches voted - at all - for Kentucky, Auburn, or Tennessee.
Plus, Tennessee's reputation is crap right now. The way things are going there, most of their players may be in prison by New Year's Eve.

By Allan on   11/30/2009 10:12 AM

Re: Week of November 23, 2009 - Week five: Rivalry Week.

Stop posting about UNC v. USC. UNC isn't going to be eligible because of their loss to State. The ACC rules mandate that the team selected has to be within 1 conference victory of the best available team. At 4-4, UNC isn't within 1 game of VT (6-2), Clemson (6-2) or GT (7-1).

It will be either Clemson, VT or GT from the ACC and VT seems like the best choice.

By ACC fan on   11/30/2009 10:13 AM

Re: Week of November 23, 2009 - Week five: Rivalry Week.

I am so pumped about the Gamecocks beatdown of Clemson. As a former independant and ACC member we have a history of facing ACC schools as well as Virginia Tech and Miami in our Independent days. I don't know a single Gamecock who has not been dying to go to Atlanta on New Years Eve. I am not just talking about this year but for many many past years. Ask any opposing fan (UF) etc. and they will tell you USC has some of the best fans in College football. The fact is that other than the Gator Bowl we have never had a chance to bowl this close to Atlanta which means that lots of people who have been wanting to travel for the Bowl will do so this year. Because of our defense every game this year has been a great/close game and that means that the public audience will watch your advertisements and make your sponsers happy. The Gamecock nation will make this 2009 matchup a continued success!

Re: Week of November 23, 2009 - Week five: Rivalry Week.

Here's some stats for all these USC fans:

- South Carolina lost to both Georgia and Arkansas. Arkansas beat them on Nov. 7th in a blowout.

- Until the Clemson game, SC was 1-5 in their previous games with their lone win being a 14-10 struggle against lowly Vaderbilt. They were outscored 128-63 in that stretch.

- Their last win before that stretch was a 28-26 win over UK in Columbia. It is worth noting UK lost their starting QB midway through the game and still was a missed 2 point conversion away from possibly winning.

- For those USC fans clamoring about their fan following...they did not even meet their full ticket allotment for the Outback last year as they were severely outnumbered by the Iowa fans. If they can't sell out a New Years Day Bowl in Tampa on the eve of one of their best SEC seasons, there is no way this underachieving team will sell out their hal of the Georgia Dome.

Choose UGA, Auburn, Kentucky, or Arkansas.

A great match-up would be South Carolina vs. VA Tech. USC fans will pack the Georgia Dome in garnet and black. USC fans will stay in Atlanta and the surrounding areas to help boost the economy in Atlanta. You would have a great match-up at QB as Steven Garcia and Tyrod Taylor tries to lead their respective teams to victory. You will also have two of college football's greatest active coaches in Steve Spurrier and Frank Beamer.

Re: SEC Selection Recommendation...Arkansas

I would ask that you guys give serious consideration to Arkansas as the selection from the SEC for the Chick-Fil-A bowl. We have travelled very well to each of the SEC championship games that we have been to in the Georgia dome. The last time we were there we gave Florida a serious run for their money. We interject money into the local economy through hotel rooms, entertainment, and food. We have an avid fan base and a very high octane offense. With arguably the SEC's #1 QB in multiple passing categories. Heck, he's actually one of the top QB's in the nation. I would ask that you give Arkansas a serious look. We had Florida beat (if not for the ref.'s), we handily beat a respectable S. Carolina and Auburn team. It took LSU overtime to down us. We're a very exciting team, with an avid fan base, with a top caliber QB that you can hype, and the desire to travel to Atlanta and spend some dollars. I know we can pull the ticket sales as well. We are firmly behind this team and will travel where necessary. Thanks in advance for your consideration!

Re: Week of November 23, 2009 - Week five: Rivalry Week.

A few years back there was a growing discussion of having UT play VT at Bristol speedway. rumors were the promtors were offering several million to each team for a regular season game to make it happen. they wanted it for obvious reason. It would have sold out at over 130,000 seats for both teams to come to a neutral site.

Despite UT's record this year i am more excited about the program than i have been in 5 years. I am going to UT's bowl game no matter where it is. this is the first time for me to do that. i hope it is in Atlanta at Chick-fil-a Bowl!!

Re: Week of November 23, 2009 - Week five: Rivalry Week.

Kentucky fans want this bowl more than any other SEC team, they will travel better than any other SEC team, and they will spend more money than any other SEC team. This game would provide the type of bowl game the entire Kentucky fan base can rally around, and you would see Big Blue Nation travel in huge numbers to Atlanta.

Kentucky finished the season winning 5 of their last 7 games while beating traditional conference powers Georgia and Auburn on the road. This is truly a team full of road warriors that would love the challenge this bowl would provide. Rich Brooks' Kentucky teams are also as good as it gets when given time to prepare as evidenced by their 3-0 bowl game record.

By Tyler on   11/30/2009 7:51 PM

Re: Week of November 23, 2009 - Week five: Rivalry Week.

Kentucky makes a whole lot of sense for this bowl. The fans will travel from all over the state of Kentucky to Atlanta. Look at the attendance of their two Music City Bowl appearances. The city of Atlanta needs a selection that will fill hotel rooms, restaurants, bars, gift shops, etc. Make it happen, Chick Fil-A Committee.

Re: Week of November 23, 2009 - Week five: Rivalry Week.

Whats funny to me is the fans in here pulling for Kentucky and Georgia. If you wanna talk about a blowout Georgia was blown out by Tennessee. For all the Kentucky fans yall havent beat South Carolina in two decades so give it up and sorry your quarterback got hurt but theres a reason he got hurt that nasty D the Gamecocks have. Yeh we got beat by Arkansas and Tennessee but we had alot of players banged up and not at full strength. You see what happens when we are at full strength, a goal line loss to Georgia in Georgia, two close games with the number 1 ranked teams in the nation (Florida and Alabama in Alabama) and we beat Ole Miss who was ranked number 4 at the time, and last but definitely not least we dominated Clemson who would beat any of the other teams SEC teams being considered by the Chick-Fil-A Bowl. Not to mention we shut down two heisman trophy candidates CJ Spiller and Tim Tebow. Talk your trash about South Carolina but these boys are young and they are for real. With all the freshmen and sophomores we have starting on Offense and Defense watch out South Carolina is gonna explode. The worst team we lost to was Arkansas... Kentucky you lost to Mississippi State. Compare South Carolina schedule strength with these other SEC teams... are schedule is much stronger. So quit hating if we dont make the Chick-fil-A Bowl we will just blowout a team in the Music City Bowl its no big deal. Ill be laughing when Virginia Tech or Clemson blows out Georgia or Kentucky. Hahahahaha

UK makes a lot of sense for a number of reasons:
1. $$$$$ no one will travel to Atlanta like UK would, look at when UK plays in the SEC tournament the entire town is painted blue and white and the Big Blue Mist would travel in full force to Atlanta, hotel rooms, restaurants, bars, and tourists attractions would be packed for days.
2. Randall Cobb, there might not be a more exciting player in the SEC than Cobb, he can do it all, plays QB, Wr, PR, Kr, and holds field goals and extra points.
3. Finished the season incredibly hot winning 5 of the last 7 games including wins @ Auburn and @ Georgia. This team has proven that they can play with anyone in the country.
4. Look at the last 3 bowl games UK has played in, UK has brought TONS of fans and all 3 games were incredibly exciting games that came down to the last few minutes of the games.

If you want the best option from the SEC than pick Kentucky

I think it would be great to see a SC vs. VA Tech match up with two great coaches. That will pack the house!!!!

GAMECOCKS FOR THE CHICKFILA BOWL!!! USC fans will flock to Atlanta I guarantee a sellout! Columbia is the perfect distance and USC fans will spend the weekend in Atlanta and splurge!

Dont take Georgia if you want to bring money to Atlanta. There are already enough Georgia fans living in Atlanta to fill the stadium, so yes a sellout, but no hotel revenue, attractions, etc from out of towners.

Another reason not to take Georgia is they played in Atlanta 2 days ago against GT and they played in the Chickfila bowl in 2007. So less exciting destination for Georgia fans.

Re: SEC Selection

I read all these posts lobbying for their team and of course I'm inclined to do the same. The simple fact is that Auburn and S. Carolina don't even deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as Arkansas for consideration. Arkansas convincingly downed both of these teams. I personally believe it comes down to a discussion about Kentucky or Arkansas. Cotton will take Ole Miss, LSU to Capital One, and Tennessee to Outback since they beat Kentucky. I look at our losses and I see where it could be a toss up between Kentucky and Arkansas. I just don't see how you would hype up the Kentucky team. Arkansas has a high octane offense that would provide a formiddable challenge to any ACC team. Plus, you could hype up the preseason Heisman contender, Johnny Unitas contender, etc. for 2010 in Ryan Mallett. In the end, you wouldn't regret a Arkansas pick. We avidly support our team and you can bank on us being there for this bowl. There is a lot of excitement around the Arkansas program. Heck, I live 6 hrs. from Fayetteville and have travelled to two of their home games this year (the whooping of Auburn and S. Carolina). We also travelled to Oxford, Tuscaloosa, and Baton Rouge. All of these were road trips of several hrs. Atlanta has the allure of a big city, new year's dollars we would spend, hotel revenue, etc. Count this Hog fan and others in!!

GAME! COCKS! GAME! COCKS! GAME! COCKS! You will never forget the night the Gamecocks showed up in Atlanta and made a statement that they are for real and Garcia and Spurrier have a turned this program around. This is a young fired up and exciting team that is on its way to greatness. The start of a new era begins now for the Cocks and its up to you to let that start in your own backyard. The Chick fil a Bowl against a great ACC team. They have proven all year they are as good as anybody in the country. With the gamecocks you are a guaranteed a good game. Look back at the schedule and see how they played against the best. Even when adversity struck they fought back with heart you just don't see week in and week out. The Tenn game could have been a blowout just like the UGA v Tenn game wasn't after three straight fumbles but the rest of the game the cocks fought and stayed alive. I can guarantee you will see a hungry team ready to fight for respect for their program. UGA is dissappointed and coming in with the most losses in the history of the Richt era. Yeah they are a storied program but the Gamecocks are hungry to be in that same sentence and could not be happier about the end of their season. Don't let a four point loss in Athens keep the Cocks out. One play and the Gamecocks would be a lock for this game. I think the Cocks are ready to make a statement to the nation. Its up to you to let them do that on New Years Eve in the biggest bowl in the Southeast. Thanks for your consideration and GO COCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

South Carolina would be an excellent choice for the bowl game. The team is very young and coming off a big win over Clemson. Your bowl could showcase what will be the surprise team in the SEC next year. Your bowl would be looked back at as the moment when South Carolina got over the hump.

SC...you will get your UNC match up but it will be in Nashville. Arkansas dismantled you by 17...Tenn took you apart by 18...Fla dominated you at home...you skated by a mediocre NC St. team...squeaked by Kentucky. You talk of turn around, how long has Spurrier been turning this program around? It's funny how one game at home with two weeks to prepare makes you qualified.

By SEC Fan on   12/1/2009 12:04 PM

Kentucky Travels to EVERYTHING

For anyone stating that UK will not travel to a bowl in Atlanta does not know the Kentucky fan base. Kentucky has set the attendance record for the Music City Bowl TWICE and Atlanta is not a much farther drive for many Kentuckians. Not discounting the game, Kentucky always finds a way to win/keep it close in games not many give them a chance in.

With a 4th straight bowl victory on the line, I fully expect Rich Brooks to be ready for any challenge an ACC team would present him. Kentucky won at Auburn for the first time since 1961 this season and at Georgia for the first time since 1977 so big games do not shake the valor of this particular Kentucky team.

Kentucky also brings to the table the dynamic player makers Randall Cobb and Derrick Locke. This duo has lead Kentucky to the fifth best rush offense in the SEC and helping Kentucky average a solid 27.2 points on the season. The defense features All-American corner Trevard Lindley and the SEC's fifth best tackler in Micah Johnson.

So to the Selection committee. I do not come here to bash the other teams, but only to make a case for a team deserving of the honor to play in your bowl. The Kentucky fans will easily help to sell out your game, as well as, make this game a great view on ESPN for all to see on New Year's Eve. As a Kentucky Colonel and Ambassador for the Commonwealth of Kentucky, I ask that you consider this hardworking collaboration of young men for your bowl. See you on New Year's Eve!

South Carolina vs. North Carolina

USC vs. UNC would be an exciting game & sold out. VaTech is a very good team although the VaTech fans I'm friend with are hoping for a BCS bid...and if that doesn't happen it could dampen their post-season excitement (i.e. Jax or Charlotte may be more appropriate). I'm enjoying some Georgia and other fans bashing USC fans for not selling out the Outback Bowl last year. Objectively, Carolina hasn't been beating Clemson very often...so when it happens, it puts a huge charge through the fan base. Yes, a simple win over Clemson last year and they'd have sold out their allotment without any problems. Don't forget that USC filled-up the Outback Bowl in 2 previous visits vs. Ohio State. This is a lot different from Georgia's upset win at GaTech. Georgia fans are pleasently surprised but not "fired-up" - a result of larger than life expectations. Their season is still considsered a fairly big disappointment by their standards with Coach Richt likely to make staff changes. That being said, I can't understand why the Outback would choose Tennessee and Kiffin's Outlaws over Georgia...unless the belief is that Georgia fans just won't travel to the game.

Re: Week of November 23, 2009 - Week five: Rivalry Week.

Let's be honest, the choice for the SEC team is obvious at this point. With word leaking that the Outback Bowl has passed up Tennessee for Auburn, you HAVE to take Tennessee for the Chick-Fil-A Bowl. They finished 2nd in the SEC East, beating every team in the division but Florida. They pretty much whipped Georgia and South Carolina, beat Vanderbilt convincingly, and pulled out a win against Kentucky in what was billed by Kentucky as their biggest game ever.

There is a strong contingent of Tennessee fans in Georgia who will jump at the chance to see their team in the CFA Bowl. Tennessee fans from everywhere in the southeast will find their way to Atlanta. Selling the game out will not be a question. You also will see a lot of happy hotel operators in the Atlanta area who will have more bookings from Tennessee being a part of this game. If you chose Georgia...which would be a terrible choice just because Tennessee is much more deserving and showed it on the field...the UGA fans will not be booking hotel rooms as this game will be in their backyard. I understand it will likely come down to Tennessee and Georgia at this point, and Tennessee makes much more sense financially and also competitively on the field.

You also have to look at the media attention that would be on the CFA Bowl if Tennessee is the SEC representative. Lane Kiffin has the attention of the media more so than any other coach in the nation. The CFA Bowl will get A LOT of press attention with Tennessee. With UGA, you have a team that is extremely disappointed with their season and a turnover in the coaching staff on the horizon. There is a story-line with Tennessee, there is nothing with UGA.

Regarding the ACC team, two teams stand out the most. Virginia Tech and Clemson. Virginia Tech fans and Tennessee fans have been wanting to see their teams face each other for a long time. There have even been talks of holding a match-up between the two at Bristol Motor Speedway for years. This game would bring a lot of excitement and would be a HOT ticket. If Clemson is selected, that is still a great match-up with Tennessee. There was some bad blood between the two teams from their last meeting at the CFA Bowl years ago, which included allegations of a Clemson spy at Tennessee practices leading to Phil Fulmer shutting down practices to the media for the remainder of his time at UT. That match-up could be billed as the fight for Orange Supremacy. Once again, selling the game out would not be a worry.

This is not just the simple musings of a fan making a desperate plea for his/her team. These are all very relevant facts and circumstances that cannot be denied. The Outback Bowl has given the Chick-Fil-A Bowl an absolute gift by passing on Tennessee. Don't make the same mistake.

Tennessee fans are hungry to a good bowl trip, and the Chic-Fil-A Bowl would be awesome. The Vols haven't been there in six years.

UT-Virginia Tech would be an incredible game. The Dome would be packed solid. UT-Clemson and UT-Georgia Tech would be a great battle, too. Those are regular season match-ups UT fans have been rooting for for years now, and the Chic-Fil-A has a chance to put it together.

Please pick the Vols.

By Michael on   12/1/2009 5:08 PM

Re: Week of November 23, 2009 - Week five: Rivalry Week.

Tennessee fans would pack the Dome. The Vols beat Kentucky, Georgia & South Carolina -- the three teams that the Chick-Fil-A presumably is considering.

You'd get Eric Berry, who likely would have won the Thorpe and Lott awards by then. You'd also get one of the hottest new coaches in the nation.

UT would provide the best match-ups and bring the most fans, as well as help the local economy (which Ga. would not do). It's also the fairest thing to do.

If y'all would pick TENNESSEE AND VIRGINIA TECH for the Chick-fil-a bowl that is close enough that it would be sold out in no time. Plus, I bet you will have the best food ever (Chick-fil-a) in the stadium, if not very close.

It is a great idea for you all to pick these two teams because the fan base is close enough to drive, the match-up would be unbelievable, and there wouldn't be as many fumbles since UK & USC aren't playing. Gotta look at the bright side!

Re: Week of November 23, 2009 - Week five: Rivalry Week.

VT vs UT!!!!! I'm tired of hearing the Chokies fans talk trash. I go to school 30 minutes away from VT and have attented several games at Lane (only b/c my boyfriend goes to Tech) I think Tech is one of the most overrated teams. Their in conference schedule sucks and when they play teams out of conference, they get beat (LSU and Bama') While UT hasn't had the best of years, it's a growing program with a new coach. Next year they will be awesome! Both fan bases have been wanting this matchup for a long time and it would be a great game. Fans from both schools would definitely make the trip down. I hope this game really does happen and them Vols can show them Hokies who really is the best team!

Virginia Tech vs. Tennessee i was excited at the prospect of playing on the infield of Bristol. This is much more realistic and both team's fans will come in force.

Re: Week of November 23, 2009 - Week five: Rivalry Week.

1. Carolina absolutely crushed their rival Clemson last weekend 2. Carolina fans are in full support of their team and travel anywhere and everywhere 3. ATL is practically next door to anywhere in South Carolina 4. Spurrier is one of the most loved/hated coaches in football and everyone loves watching him and his teams 5. Carolina is 2-0 this year against ACC teams and would love to prove it again that they are a very good and up and coming young team 6. 40th anniversary since Carolina was last in this great bowl
GO COCKS!!!

Oh yea and Eric Norwood and the Gamecocks outstanding defense put an absolute stop on CJ Spiller the Heisman hopeful

Re: Week of November 23, 2009 - Week five: Rivalry Week.

Nothing would satisfy me more than to see a GT rematch against UGA. This is assuming, of course, that GT will not be playing in the Orange Bowl (which is a significant assumptions right now). If that scenario would play out, a GT / UGA rematch would draw significant interest from both parties, seeing how the recent game turned out. I would not expect anything but a great game if this was the Chick-fil-a Bowl match-up.

We are all wasting our time. Tennessean.com is reporting that the decision has been made. Tennessee will play Virginia Tech in the Chik-fil-a Bowl. They are also reporting that KY willl play in the Music City Bowl.

I don't know why they just don't come out and announce it.

Re: Week of November 23, 2009 - Week five: Rivalry Week.

JUST SAY NO TO USC!!!!! What a boring team to watch. Just select UGA and I will promise that my friends will get hotel rooms. USC fans are the cheapest out there they will not spend any money. Also hotel rooms will not be that big an issue as it is New Years Eve, most hotels already have heavy bookings.

JUST SAY NO TO USC!!!!

As a standing CFA Bowl ticket holder and a UGA alumnus please do not invite VT and UGA. I love my dawgs ,but I like a variety of teams in the CFA. VT and UGA went in '06. TN vs. VT is intriguing. SC vs. any Carolina team would be good old hate. Ole Miss or Arkansas would be good vs. UNC or Miami . Any two well matched teams would sellout.

i think miami with a 9-3 record and #14 ranking in bcs would be a great pick for chick filla bowl we have a strong following and atlanta is very close to miami. we are one of the more recognizeable and marketable teams in amercia

Tennessee vs. Virginia Tech is a dream match-up for the city of Atlanta and for college football. Both teams would fill the Georgia Dome and all the hotels for miles. Please make it happen. I am so excited for this game and will buy my tickets as soon as the match up is announced!

Pick the Gamecocks vs UNC, both teams are fairly close by and would travel well. Please dont take GA or TN!!!!

Miami vs UGA!

C'mon! This is the rare, perfect opportunity to make that matchup. I am an alum of both schools (undergrad at UGA, grad school at UM) and would love to see this game. For those who are wondering where my allegiance lies...GO CANES!

Re: Week of November 23, 2009 - Week five: Rivalry Week.

I grew up going to games in Death Valley, and I still think it's crazy talk to say that Clemson would stand a chance against any SEC team in the Dome -- while Clemson fans will show up, it's fair to say after this past weekend that their team probably won't.

I think Virginia Tech has clearly proven that Atlanta is a do-able journey and, if up against a good SEC team, it could definitely be a battle. Now if TN is a good SEC team is another discussion....

but tennessee vs virginia tech would be sold out also and the nation would be watching but i would also like to see a clemson vs georgia matchup with the two great rushing offenses they have anything is better than watching that junk called an offense that paul johnson ran last year and gotten taken to the georgia dome/woodshed

Re: Week of November 23, 2009 - Week five: Rivalry Week.

Tennessee vs. Virginia Tech, a unbelievable matchup for Hotlanta!! As a dieheart college football fan, this would quench a thirst for a matchup that has been 14 years in the making!! Both schools have very loyal followings, great athletes on both sides of the ball, tremendous personalities in both coaches Kiffin and Beamer, and probably the number 1 pick in the NFL draft in Eric Berry, who will have at least 2 awards in his pocket by the 31st. The city of Atlanta has received the best non-BCS matchup of the bowl season and thanks to the snub from the Outback Bowl, you can give a gift to both schools that would only add to your stellar reputation that your bowl has lived up to over the years!! Please make it happen!!

Re: Week of November 23, 2009 - Week five: Rivalry Week.

Here in Bristol, TN (the midway point between Tennessee and Virginia Tech - the matchup everyone on I-81 between Roanoke and Knoxville has wanted to see) news of a probable meeting in Atlanta has both Vols and Hokies fans abuzz. Many of the prominent high school football teams in Southwest Virginia and Northeast Tennessee have had players suit up for the Hokies and Vols. It's a rivalry, even though the two teams never play. It's a rivlary that makes sense and a meeting in the Chick-fil-a Bowl can help boost what Bruton Smith and the 160,000-seat Bristol Motor Speedway have been trying to accomplish for some time by getting Tech and Tennessee on the field together. PLEASE MAKE THIS HAPPEN. If it does, the Tri-Cities will be ghost towns because everyone will be in Atlanta. The media are salivating. It's getting crazy.

Re: Week of November 23, 2009 - Week five: Rivalry Week.

UT vs. VT is the only game that makes sense. When you look at other predictions on various mainstream media outlets. How could UGA v Clemson be better. Neither team will be ranked if this happens. UT is the better team in their division, VT is better than Clemson also. Regionally people have been waiting 2 decades for the UT v VT game to happen, this is the year. UT is a rising program, UGA releasing coaches before bowl games means disappointment is in the UGA air.

UT vs. Vt will be one of the best match ups of the bowl season.

TN hasn't played any sort of season worthy of being in a good bol like the Chick-fil-a Bowl. Georgia vs UNC would be interesting.

Hokies and Vols ... what a regional match up between two absolutely rabid fan bases of two rivals that never play each other. There will be no one left in southwest va or eastern tn if this game happens.

Chick fil A remembers the "record crowd" for the chick fil a bowl. That was UGA and VT in 2006. The fans will travel, the tickets will be sold in record time again, and You will sell more chicken sandwiches in Georgia and Virginia because of it. I am a UGA fan living amongst hokies and I would gladly make the drive again.
