Character, Leadership Foundations For Success
By Mark Richt
Head Football Coach, University of Georgia
No matter the level of ability on the field, everything eventually rises and falls on leadership; therefore nothing happens until someone steps up to the plate. The foundation of leadership is character. Barna Research asked 5,000 kids what are the top three things you look for in a leader? The top three answers were: 1. Do you care about me? 2. Can I trust you? 3. Do you know where you are going?
Kids today are looking for role models to follow. Billy Graham once said “a coach can impact more people in a year than I can in a lifetime.” What an awesome responsibility we have been given as coaches of young people but what a great opportunity we have to make a difference in kids’ lives. I like to suggest that in talking to kids we ask questions and let the kids learn from each other. A key to remember is the attention span of kids today is between seven and eight minutes.
Ask what is “character” and let some kids answer individually. Then let them talk about what was said as a group. Someone once called character the ability to know and do the right thing. Another person called character the ability to value the right, know the right, and do the right even when no one is watching. Ask what they think and let them talk.
Some say the three biggest things that impact our lives are the people we meet, the books we read and the music we listen to. Someone once said “show me your friends and I will show you your future.” Bring up each point to the kids and let them discuss each one of them.
When we become coaches and athletes we are all role models whether we want to be or not. What we have to decide is what kind of role model we are going to be. Ask the kids what a role model is and why they are important and let them discuss. Talk about important role models in your lives as coaches and ask the kids to name some of their role models. Coaches have a responsibility to be positive role models in every area of our lives on the field of play, in the classroom and in the community. We owe that to the kids we are influencing and leading.

2009 Partner League Championship Recognition
This past fall youth football teams and cheerleading squads across Metro Atlanta saw the stakes of their football championship games and cheerleading championships taken to the next level. The championship teams from all Chick-fil-A Bowl Youth League partner leagues were recognized on Chick-fil-A Bowl Game Day, December 31, 2009. Winning teams will started the day by marching in the Chick-fil-A Bowl Parade along with groups from all over the Southeast including the marching bands, mascots and cheerleaders from the Virginia Tech and the University of Tennessee.
Following the Parade, winning teams made their way to the Chick-fil-A Bowl FanFest Made Possible by Coca-Cola Zero. FanFest is more than 400,000 square feet of family friendly activities for football fans of all ages. The highlight of the event was the “ACC vs. SEC Pep Rallies & Team Walks.” At 5:00PM Virginia Tech and Tennessee fans gathered along with their marching bands, cheerleaders and mascots to give their team final words of encouragement as they make their way to the Georgia Dome for kickoff. This is an exclusive offer for Chick-fil-A Bowl Youth League partners. To find out more information about how your league can become an official youth league partner in 2010 contact Anton Dawson at 404-586-1923 or adawson@macoc.com.

NCAA Football Youth Day Clinics Grow to 22 Locations
Nationwide for 2010
Youth Football Players Receive Instruction from
College Coaches and Student-Athletes
After hosting 10 successful Youth Day Clinics across the nation in 2009, the NCAA Football Youth Initiative has announced the locations of 22 Youth Day Clinics scheduled in 2010 for players five to 14 years of age. Since 2007, the Youth Initiative has partnered with bowl cities from Atlanta to Albuquerque, N.M. to host half-day sessions led by college coaches and student-athletes from area colleges and universities. Participants run agility drills, receive offensive and defensive training, and learn character development tenets to help them on and off the field. A total of 3,000 youth football players have attended the Youth Day Clinics in the program’s first three years – this number is expected to nearly double after next year."The Youth Day Clinics allow us to teach kids the basics of football while incorporating fundamental character development principles," said Bob Vecchione - chair, NCAA Football Youth Initiatives Committee. "Growing from 10 Youth Day Clinic sites in 2009 to 22 next year enables us to partner with dedicated bowls, conference offices and local University coaches to reach youth in each of the respective communities." Exact clinic dates and times will be announced in late spring. Parents and coaches interested in registering young players for the clinics should check www.ncaafootball.com/youth for updated information at that time. Participating bowls include:
